About Winterboro High School

Winterboro High School is one of seventeen schools comprising the Talladega County School System.  The school system employs approximately 1009 employees and provides services to approximately 8,000 students.

The Winterboro area is nestled in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains in east central Alabama, and from the school campus, one can see where Sleeping Giant Mountain, Blue Mountain and Mt. Cheaha form a protective barrier for a beautiful and very large valley.

Winterboro School had its beginning during the late 1800s in a one-room log building located on the east side of Alabama Highway 21.  In 1890, the log cabin was replaced by a two-story structure which housed the school until a move for consolidation was undertaken in 1919.  That year, 18 areas of land were deeded for the consolidation of the schools of Alpine, Riser's Chapel, Berney's Station and Winterboro.

Here, a six-room structure was erected under the Smith-Hughes Act at a cost of $8,200.  In 1935, the people of the community came together to build a larger and more modern building and again consolidated the schools of Tallassahatchie, Plantersville, and Winterboro.

As the new school was erected, citizens from the surrounding communities brought wagons and teams to haul rock from a local farm and the surrounding hills, resulting in the current stone structure and making "the little rock school" a landmark of Talladega County.  The building was completed in 1937, and through the years, classrooms and facilities were added as enrollment increased and the need was established.

Today, Winterboro School serves approximately 370 students in grades 5-12, is fully accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and has earned a place on the State of Alabama's Register of Historic Places.  The goal of the faculty and staff is to connect a community rich in history to a future flourishing with possibilities by providing a challenging, rigorous curriculum empowering all students to be successful in the 21st century.
